Linda Ronstadt, who emerged from SoCal’s vaunted early-’70s country-folk scene, became the American female rock superstar of the Me Decade. After the initial success of the Stone Poneys’ Michael Nesmith-penned “Different Drum,” Ronstadt expanded her horizons through interpretations of a long string of successful pop and R&B covers. Along the way she championed emerging songwriters like Warren Zevo…

Autobiography of Mark Twain: The Complete and Authoritative Edition, Volume 1

$6.11

“Mark Twain dictated much of this book—now it is a book at last—from a big rumpled bed. Reading it is a bit like climbing in there with him.”—Roy Blount, Jr.”To say that the editors have done an extremely good job is a little like saying the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel does a good job of keeping the rain off the Pope’s head. It is true but it doesn’t give even a whiff of the grandeur of the thing.”—Robert D. Richardson, author of Emerson: The Mind on Fire”Mark Twain, always so blithely ahead of his time, has just outdone himself: he’s brought us an Autobiography from beyond the grave: a hundred-year-old relic that yet manages to accomplish something new. It anticipates the Cubism just taking form in Samuel Clemens’s last years, by exploding the confines of orderliness, sequence, the dutiful march of this-then-that. In so doing, it gives us not simply Mark Twain’s life—that is the prosaic work of biographers—but the ways in which he thought of his life: in all the fragmented recollection, distraction, creation, revision and dreaming that make up the true, divinely jumbled devices we all use to recapture experience and feeling. If this prodigious and prodigal pastiche were a machine, it would be the Paige typesetter—except that it works.”—Ron Powers, author of Mark Twain: A Life

Cowboy Guitars

Cowboy Guitars

Back in the good old days, all of America was infatuated with the singing cowboys of movies and radio. This huge interest led to the production of “cowboy guitars.” These were guitars manufactured with western scenes painted right on the guitar, and were sold by stores such as Sears and Montgomery Wards. This fun, fact-filled book is an outstanding roundup of these wonderful instruments, starting with the Gene Autry model of 1932, through guitars made to capitalize on the popularity of the Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers, up through present-day makers. Includes hundreds of fantastic photos, a 32-page color section, and biographies of the artists behind the guitars, plus a chapter on leading custom guitar maker Greg Rich, showcasing some of the western guitars he has built. A must for every guitar collector! Steve Evans is the world’s foremost authority on and leading collector of cowboy guitars. He owns a music store in Jacksonville, AR. Daddy Bug & Friends/Virgo Vibes

Daddy Bug & Friends/Virgo Vibes

$14.97

Roy Ayers recorded these sessions in the midst of his four years working with Herbie Mann on some of the flutist’s best work. Produced by Mann, the music shows the two sides to the vibist that have been evident throughout his career: one the probing jazz artist, the other a performer with more commercial tendencies. The Virgo Vibes session from 1967 — with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson and trumpeter Charles Tolliver — opens with its best track, Tolliver’s “The Ringer,” a piece in the same vein as the advanced hard bop of the trumpeter’s big band, Music Inc. Gerald Wilson’s “In the Limelight,” another highlight, features a strong, imaginative solo from Ayers. Harold Land supplants Henderson on two tracks, including Ayers’ “Virgo Vibes,” a good medium-tempo extended blues. For the more commercially inclined Daddy Bug from 1969, the leader is joined by pianist Herbie Hancock, bassists Buster Williams and Ron Carter, and other notables, including drummer Freddie Waits. Guitarist Sonny Sharrock is on one track, contributing an innocuous accompaniment part rather than his trademark shredding. William Fischer’s arrangements include some effective string and woodwind section work. The tracks are relatively short, notably the title number, a good piece that, unfortunately, trails off too soon. With its supply of better tracks outnumbering the more mundane and an impressive roster of players, there is enough here to sustain listener interest. All of these players, though, have turned in more impressive work elsewhere, including Ayers on Mann’s classic fusion release Memphis Underground. ~ Jim Todd, Rovi

USED: Monk on Monk

USED: Monk on Monk

$7.99

To celebrate what would have been his father Thelonious Monk’s 80th birthday, drummer T.S. Monk put together an all-star group (an expanded version of his sextet) and toured, performing an all-Thelonious program. Just prior to the beginning of the live performances, T.S. and his band recorded this CD. The music is excellent, but there are so many guest artists making cameo appearances (including trumpeters Roy Hargrove, Clark Terry, Arturo Sandoval and Wallace Roney, Wayne Shorter on soprano, tenors Grover Washington Jr. and Jimmy Heath, pianists Herbie Hancock and Geri Allen, bassists Ron Carter, Christian McBride and Dave Holland and singers Dianne Reeves and Kevin Mahogany) that one never really gets to hear Monk’s band very much. Considering that T.S.’s unit includes altoist Bobby Watson and singer Nnenna Freelon (both of whom are only heard from briefly), it is a pity that he opted for so many unnecessary guests. There are good versions of such tunes as “Little Rootie Tootie” (which has a very effective Grover Washington Jr. tenor solo), “Crepuscule With Nellie” (one of the few renditions of a band actually stretching out on this theme), and “Bright Mississippi,” plus the debut of a recently discovered Monk composition (“Two Timer”), so this set is recommended. But one is left looking forward to hearing the actual T.S. Monk ensemble interpret the songs. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Good records work; great records have an organic unity. By their nature, tributes can rarely be more than good records, but somehow Red Hot + Riot manages to transcend that. In part it’s because it moves into uncharted territory, mixing African and African-American artists in ways that haven’t happened before, all in tribute to the late Fela Kuti (an apt subject for an AIDS fundraiser, since he died of the disease). And so there’s rapping over Afro-beat grooves (a refreshing change from lame hip-hop beats), jazz, and R&B, African musicians playing Afro-beat, and a whole lot more, plus some of the most conscious words you’ll hear in many a year. Mix Master Mike mashes up some Fela cuts for the interludes, which makes for perfect breaks, especially the opener, which leads into the powerful “Kalakuta Show” from two members of Blackalicious. It’s a record of highlights, such as the groove jam on “Water Get No Enemy,” with D’Angelo, Macy Gray, Nile Rodgers, and jazzer Roy Hargrove (who blows up a storm everywhere he appears on the disc) along with Femi Kuti, or the scathing “Shuffering and Shmiling,” featuring Femi’s band, Positive Force, behind Dead Prez and Talib Kweli, with Brazilian star Jorge Ben adding rhythm guitar and some sublime scat singing. Djali Madi Tounkara and Common team up for a lovely “Years of Tears and Sorrow,” before Senegalese star Cheikh L? unleashes a fearsome “Shankara/Lady,” a song he played as a teen, adding talking drum and a thick sound. On “Gentleman,” Me’Shell Ndeg? Ocello and saxophonist Ron Blake work with Yerba Buena to create a piece that sounds like the song Talking Heads really wanted to do with “Life During Wartime.” The mood slows toward the end of the album after “No Agreement,” where Fela alumnus Tony Allen powers through the song, leading Baaba Maal, Ray Lema, and African rappers Positive Black Soul. It leads into two non-Fela songs, Kelis on “So Be It,” which is pure Fela in feel if not execution, and a dr…
